In 2003 Gerald Zaltman, then professor at Harvard Business School,
turned the whole thinking behind marketing on its head. His ground
breaking research “How Customer’s Think”, proved that customers
make decisions based on 95% emotion, backed up by only 5%
of logic. This was a shock to all of us who had had it drummed into
us at marketing school that the messaging focus should be on
benefits, benefits, benefits.

In 2007, Andrew O’Connell, also of HBS, presented his paper “How
Emotions Fuel Good Decisions”. His research - that strong emotions
boost attention and memory - has since then been taken to heart
